The Bergen Mechanical works, Bergen Mekaniske Verksted (BMV) was established in 1855, and in 1946 they delivered their first diesel engine. In 1984 the diesel engine division was spun off, and in 1985 it was acquired by Ulstein. In 1999 Ulstein was then acquired by Rolls Royce.
Bergen have manufactured more than 6,550 engines, most of which are still operating. In recent years there have been two basic ranges of engine: a 250 bore 300mm stroke engine (First known by the name Bergen L, followed by Bergen K and now the Bergen C). The second range is a 320mm bore engine which originally had a stroke of 360mm. This has since been extended to 400mm stroke.
Both the 250mm and the 320mm engines have gas variants which in the case of the C and B engines have been bored out to 260mm and 350mm respectively. The previous B models have now been replaced with the B 33:45 offering 600 kw per cylinder.
