History of Wärtsilä
Wärtsilä was founded in the mid-19th century as a sawmill and ironworks in the municipality of Tohmajärvi, Finland. Since then it has developed a wide range of products from car components to power plants.
Wärtsilä is now the largest manufacturer of medium-speed four-stroke diesels worldwide, and the second-largest manufacturer of slow-speed two-stroke engines, with engines installed in ships and power stations all around the world. This must be seen to be quite an achievement for a company based in a country with only about five and a half million people, and it is a testimony to the product design and successful business strategy of the company. Wärtsilä has also been a leading developer of dual-fuel engines, which they believe will become one of the key solutions to the problem of emissions from ships (and power stations where the supply of gas is not reliable).
